Each year 2425 Squadron 'adopts' a charity. Even though we rely on donations ourselves we still see it as important that we help worthy causes. In fact it is part of the ATC's community ethos to help groups and charities. This year (2009) the Squadron will be raising money for When You Wish Upon a Star www.whenyouwishuponastar.org.uk/, the locally-based charity that helps make dreams come true for sick children.

Cadets Hannah Lees, Emily Walden, Ben Major and Jack Morris were taken to 644VGS at RAF Syerston for gliding experience flights by C/I Tony Wardle. Much to everyone’s disappointment, due to wind-speeds gusting over 30 knots, there was to be no flying. However, their journey was not wasted as members of 644 Squadron staff allowed them to get up close and personal with a variety of the aircraft in the hangar while demonstrating the various flying control surfaces and cockpit instruments. C/I Wardle’s favourite was the De Havilland Chipmunk, the type in which he had his first flight as an air cadet in 1957.

Photos from Belgium where our Squadron marched 80 miles in 4 days around the battlefields of Belgium. Amongst the highlights: the squadron was proud to take part in a memorial at the German cemetery and the Menin Gate Memorial with CWO Walden reading the citation. Cadets were also moved when they found names and graves of their own relatives. See them flying the Union Flag proudly in these photos.

Cadets were on duty at Rempstone which, thankfully, did not get washed out this year like it did last year. Our cadets were a credit to the ATC, working long days parking thousands of cars and selling programmes. Sunday was particularly busy and hot! We camped from Friday to Sunday and in between duty cadets enjoyed the fun of the fair. Our Committee once again excelled themselves by setting up a fund-raising book stall, ‘wine or water’ stall, plant stall, tombola and bric-a-brac stall! In addition they provided a barbeque for cadets and staff on Saturday night. Thanks to all that visited the show and came to spend money on our stalls.

What a fantastic day! After a wet start to the day the weather cleared and we were all privileged to see Vulcan XH558 take to the skies again, at its first airshow since its restoration to flying condition. Cadets were able to take advantage of their status and visit aircraft and aircrew in areas that the general public couldn't go. The Lincs Notts Air Ambulance, our chosen charity for 2008, also gave us a guided tour and talk. There were many other aircraft on static and flying display, including the Red Arrows of course.

On Saturday, 29th September, we pitched camp at Jubilee Park, Woodhall Spa, then visited the Thorpe Camp Visitor Centre and air museum. Later on, the cadets visitied the memorial to the Dambusters and learned about the famous raids. After a freezing cold night (and unexpected firework display) on the Sunday the sun came out. Two groups completed the 20k and 30k marches, fully deserving their medals.
