In mid May eight cadets and three staff members took part in the 34th International Waendel Walk in Wellingborough,Northamptonshire. The walk has grown over the years and now attracts around 4000 civilian and military participants. Our team met up on Friday evening and travelled from Tollerton to their temporary 'barracks' in the Weavers Leisure Centre, Wellingborough. This is where all of the military teams were based for the weekend.
There was an early start for the team on the Saturday with breakfast at 7am and the first day's walking starting at 9am from The Castle, Wellingborough. The first day went without a hitch with the team completing the circular15 km (9 miles) in good time in mixed weather. On Saturday evening the team were able to relax and attend some of the musical and social events laid on by the organisers, as well as having a meal together. On Sunday the team completed another circular 15 km walk in better weather conditions and with just a few minor blisters. On both days the team took 5 hours to complete the route. During the walk the local villages put on various fetes and musical events for the walkers as they passed through. Everybody had a great time with the team even coming across walkers dressed as 'Where's Wally?' and Smurf characters. The highlight of the weekend was the presentation of medals and certificates on the Sunday which confirmed the successful completion of the two days of the walk.
